Let’s Paint Some Hearts!

For this tutorial we are really going back to basics. We will be using a simple blending technique on this heart painting. It gives it almost a fuzzy edge. These pictures aren’t blurry that is just the effect you can get here!

You can paint these hearts for Valentine’s Day gifts, to hide around town, or to decorate around your home! We are painting rocks but you can also use this technique on other surfaces, like wood, as well!

Acrylic Painted Heart Supplies

For my heart rock I am using Red and Black acrylic paints. Laying down a white heart first will really help the red pop! All 3 paints were from the basic DecoArt pack. You could do this with any combination of colors, but I just love this contrast! You will need a couple of brushes. I used a number 4 flat for the blending and a larger one to fill in the heart and backdrop.

Blended Heart Painted with Acrylics Step-by-Step

Below you will find step by step images on how to create this design. There is a full video tutorial after if you are looking for more details or tips!

As I mentioned above place down a white heart first so your red pops! You may still need 2 layers of red to get a deep rich color. Load up your flat brush with your red paint. Then dab just the tip of one side into black.

Start working your way around the edge of your heart. Do small sections and blend back and forth until you like the gradation of your colors. Be careful not to get any black into your red paint. Also, be careful not to let the black creep too far over on your brush. If this happens rinse your brush over and reload it. Fill in around the heart with your black paint and your done with your painted heart!
