The red and white checkered pattern is all over the place right now! It screams summer and I just couldn’t help it, I had to make a picnic check rock to add into our summer rock painting ideas page! I add a few little friends to one if you like the extra touch.
Red and White Checkered Pattern Rocks
With the success of our plaid tutorial, I’ve been looking for some more fun patterns for rock painting.
Last month I spent some time in a waiting room so I had a bit of magazine flipping time on my hands. What do I find? A spread of fun products that all had the classic red and white checkered pattern. Of course, for me, it just inspired some rocks to paint!
For this rock painting idea give yourself some grace! With practice, your lines will get straighter and your spacing will get better. Just remember who you are painting the rock for.
If you are going to hide it out in the world it is OK if it isn’t perfect. Going to use it for a paperweight for your backyard BBQ? Then maybe practice on a few smaller rocks until you get it down. My lines aren’t perfect and they still turned out so cute!
Whatever you paint them for, they are a fantastic summer rock painting idea that will bring a smile to lots of faces.
Here is a quick sneak peek if that’s all you need. Otherwise, the full-length tutorial is located near the end of the post.

Supplies to create a red and white plaid rock
For this rock, I was using my DecoArt Acrylic Paints. The pink tone was a mixture of red and white.
I also used my 1M Black Posca paint pen for the ants’ bodies.
and my Micron Pen for the ants’ legs.
