Hand lettering is one of those skills that you just have to buckle down and take some time to practice. However, sometimes it is hard to know where to start!

Step by step instructions for hand lettering on rocks

In this hand lettering tutorial, we will be using these practice sheets and our 1M Posca paint pen.

101 Tip: If you do not have a Posca pen make sure to test your pens with the sealer you like to use before creating a masterpiece! There is nothing worst then seeing your artwork run.

Start by picking out your design. Practice on a piece of paper first by tracing the design.

Then move the template to the side and try to free hand it.

If there is an area that is harder for you to copy focus on that area again. I had a hard time here with the av transition so I gave it a few more goes before taking it to the rock.

When you are comfortable with the text it is time to move to your rock. Get your whole word on the rock first.

Then go back and thicken up any lines you need to match your template. A good rule of thumb to follow: the downward strokes are usually thicker than the upward ones.

Touch up anywhere you need and you are done!

Next, just practice, practice, practice. I promise you will get better! I’ve still got a ways to go, but these sheets really help! Before you know it your rocks will be just as beautiful as the ones you see all over the internet.
