Acrylic Flower Painting Supplies

I am painting flowers on rocks today, but this technique can be done on any surface! You will need a couple round tip brushes. I like to use size 3 for painting leaves and size 5 for painting flower pedals. If you want to add stems or touch up details at the end grab a small liner brush. You will need 2 colors of acrylic paint for your flower pedals and at least one green for your leaves.

Easy Flower Painting Step-by-Step

Below you will find step by step images on how to create this design. There is a full video tutorial after if you are looking for more details or tips!

You will use the same process as this first set of 4 pictures below to place down leaves. You can add a second color with your green, white, yellow, or just a second shade. Placing the leaves first is good practice on the brush stroke and helps fill negative space.

For the flower painting you will want to load your brush with your first color. Really wiggle in the paint. Then touch the tip in your second color. To paint a flower petal, place the tip of the brush down onto your surface.

While pulling your brush towards the center slightly increase the pressure of your brush so that it fans out a bit. Then ease off the pressure as you finish your stroke towards the center of your flower.

Work your way around the flower adding just a touch of your second color to the tip of your brush each time. You should not have to add more of the base color that you filled your brush with. After your first ring of petals you can add in some yellow in the center.

If you would like to add a second layer to your painted flower add in a bit of white to your paint to help the petals stand apart a bit. I like to make the second layer of petals a bit shorter. Start by placing your brush tip between 2 of the longer petals and pull towards the center, same as before. You can use a liner brush at the end to touch up any flower petal tips if you need. Play with different color variations and have fun!
